The prevalence of nearly all mental health problems, especially generalized anxiety and depression increased during the Covid 19 Pandemic. With the rates of Covid 19 deaths and hospitalizations decreasing and social distancing mandates ending in the United States and the rest of the world, people are now relearning how to manage their anxiety when being in close physical proximity to other students, coworkers, and strangers.  This talk will review coping strategies in the return to work or school with the lessening of social distancing measures. This talk will also remind people how to build resilience, stress the importance of connections and healthy interpersonal communications, and remind people of the data that supports the decreased mortality and comorbidities from the Covid 19 Virus.

The target audience for this continuing education program is mental health providers and clinicians working with individuals with mental health diagnoses. Materials are appropriate for learners with an introductory level of understanding about mental health concerns.

Educational Objectives:

Following this presentation, participants will be able to…

  • Describe the Covid 19 pandemic’s effects on rates of clinical depression and anxiety, especially in emergency rooms and how contributing risk factors like social isolation, lack of access to worship services, crowded emergency rooms, and unhealthy media coverage and viewing patterns contributed to this rise in mental illness.

  • Recognize the standard approaches to managing anxiety (meditation/relaxation, planning/creating structure, life balance/self-care, self-compassion/gratitude, exposure, and seeking out help from mental health providers) are the same methods that will work with excessive fear about being exposed to Covid 19 and returning to social situations.
